BEREA MUNICIPAL UTILITY DISCONNECT FOR NON-PAYMENT NOTICE
____________________________________________________________
Berea Municipal Utilities (BMU) would like to reach out to our customers with information regarding Governor Beshear’s October 19, 2020 Executive Order. This Order rescinded the suspension of utility disconnects which had been in effect since May 8, 2020. Beginning November 6, 2020 utilities across the Commonwealth can resume disconnects in accordance with local tariffs and ordinances.
BMU understands the financial hardship many of our customers have experienced due to the coronavirus pandemic and, at this time, BMU has not established a date as to when we will resume our normal disconnect procedures. However, we want to communicate with our customers now is the time to address any unpaid balances on your account. The latest Executive Order established funds to be distributed statewide in order to assist customers with their unpaid balances. Contact information for various assistance organizations will be provided in a letter sent to our customers with late balances. We will also post a listing of these organizations on our website and Facebook. We encourage you to act quickly in seeking the available funds.
To assist our customers, we will automatically set up pay arrangements for past due balances.
Past due balances will be evenly split into monthly installments according to the following:
Past Due Balance | Pay Arrangement |
Up to $200 | 6 month |
$200 – $500 | 9 month |
$500 – $1,000 | 12 month |
More than $1,000 | 15 month |
Customers are not required to call the office to request an arrangement. If you have a past due balance, you will be receiving a letter from Berea Municipal Utilities in December explaining your payment arrangement. Customers are welcome to pay the balance in full if an extension is not needed. If customers need more time to spread out payments, they can call our office during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 7:30am – 4:30pm) at (859) 986-4391 to discuss alternative payment plan options.
When a date is determined to resume our disconnects, all customers will be considered “on-time” if they have met their payment plan obligations and have paid their current billing cycle amount.
We will also be suspending any late fee charges to at least January 2021 to further assist our customers in catching up on their balances.
